IWSG: How do I find time to write in my busy day?
As I write my post for September’s Insecure Writer’s Support Group, I have to admit I don’t have this one figured out. I’m having a lot of trouble finding the time to write.
I’m not a morning person, so the idea of waking up an hour early and sitting down at the computer scares me. I wonder if my husband, dog and kitties would find me several hours later asleep, face plastered to the keyboard!
I work eight-plus hours per day, Monday through Friday. I also periodically work some evenings and weekends.
When I get home in the evening, there are only a few hours left after the pets and humans are fed, and I like to spend them with my husband. As I’ve grown older, I also find this time necessary to unwind from my day, so I can relax and fall asleep.
Since I haven’t been writing on a consistent basis, it takes me a half hour just to get the ideas flowing once I get to my computer. I can write business letters, emails and marketing plans all day long. Creative writing doesn’t flow as easily because I don’t do it often enough. I know, it sounds like the chicken and egg problem. If I wrote more creatively, it would come easier for me to write creatively. Oy!
I’ve been carving out a bit of time over the weekends and on days off, to get my creative juices flowing once again. It’s helped somewhat but I’d love to write every single day. I’d get further on my WIP. And, I’d feel better about what I did produce. I’m sounding whiny, which is not my intent. Bottom line: I need to make writing a priority if I want to make progress. I’m making a goal to carve out at least 30 minutes a day to write, even if it’s on my lunch hour. Please feel free to hold me accountable – ask me next month how I did.
What works for you, in scheduling time to write during your busy day(s)? I’d love to hear from you!

If you can get it in on your lunch hour, do it! Find a few minutes somewhere (I write on the bus to and from work) and make it a routine. Once it becomes a habit it will flow much easier.

Thank you for the encouragement and advice. You are right – I need to make it a priority and a “habit” and it will come more easily. Have a great rest of the week!

Hi Diane. I’ve recently found a timer has been very helpful as it really helps you to get those words written down and when you’re on a roll, you don’t want to stop. I’ve heard that voice recognition software can be helpful too. Everything is a bit of trial and error, but I would agree that whatever you’re comfortable with, you need to make it a habit. Best of luck with it all – it’s good to meet you! 🙂

Nice to meet you, too. Thanks for the timer idea. I’m really excited that I’m making progress in my writing. It’s a good feeling and something I’m doing for myself (not because it’s my job or my freelance opportunity or …) Have a great rest of the week!
