#AtoZChallenge: Creation, creativity and Cataract Falls

When I spend time among nature’s beauty – thick greenery, wooded forest, trickling streams and rushing waterfalls, I’m reminded how incredible God’s creative designs are.
Cataract Falls State Recreation Area, in Owens County, Ind., is one of my favorite places to enjoy the Architect’s best laid plans. I’ve visited the Falls, which are the largest in Indiana, with my mom, my friend Sandy, alone – and in most of the seasons. The trip has always been a peaceful, inspiring experience.
The creativity of nature reminds me of the writing process. There are times when I struggle to put two words together and I can’t imagine anyone wanting to read them. I equate this with striving to do something on my own, with my limited abilities and talents, and no inspiration from God. When I’m “inspired” (by God, or an experience that he has brought to mind), “writing down the bones,” as author Natalie Goldberg says, seems (almost) effortless. It’s like the free-spirited water rushing from the top of the falls to the bottom. Perfect ebb and flow. And, when I read back what I’ve written, all the pieces (the words) seem to fit comfortably. I’m not egotistic enough to think that I write perfect. I don’t. However, this process of writing brings pure joy.
Just like being near the two Cataract waterfalls. The upper falls plunge 20 feet down and the lower falls drop about 18 feet, half a mile downstream. Both are impressive and can take your breath away. A second covered bridge, which replaced the first bridge across Mill Creek that flooded in 1875, offers a different perspective yet.
The area is a treasure trove of textures, whether it’s the shape of the various leaves, sea shells that have washed up on shore or the shape of the creek bank that caresses the water’s edge. Take time to visit the Falls yourself, either in person or online. And, open yourself up to creative writing that is inspired and pure joy!
