“Two pigs were last seen heading north …”

The notice said, “Two pigs were last seen heading north on Eighth Street … .” It was our neighborhood Facebook group page, where folks post missing dogs and cats, if one needs lawn service or there are free items in the alley.

It seems they were pet pigs (not sure how you could tell. Perhaps they had better manners as they ran through adjacent yards).

If someone knows of a poster stating someone had lost their dog or cat, others would try and match up the person to the pet. Surely there couldn’t be more than one set of lost pet pigs in our particular neighborhood?

One helpful person thought they knew the house where the pigs lived so she went up to the house and knocked. No, it seems that wasn’t the right house after all.

Sometimes a good-willed person would corral the animal in a yard or garage until the appropriate owner could be found.

For a few minutes, I considered how I would contain two pigs in my back yard or perhaps just on our back deck. Then I realized I don’t know anything about taking care of pigs – pet or otherwise. And, what if they didn’t want to come to my house? How do you cajole a pet pig to come to your house?

These are the types of thoughts I was entertaining as I wondered how to help. We have coyotes come through our backyard so there is the danger factor. I’d feel terrible if the pigs were injured or eaten.

I admit when my husband and I first moved to Indiana, we attended a bus tour during the Covered Bridge Festival, and stopped at Mecca or another small town featuring a pig roast. Complete with the apple in the mouth and splayed limbs. I haven’t eaten pork since then. How can I look at the pig in the eye (or other orifice) and continue eating pork?

Great story-starter! I live in a city, so this would make one wild tale. Or maybe those two pigs had a destination in mind (a la The Incredible Journey or even the two pigs who went on the cross-country cattle drive in Lonesome Dove).

    Thanks for the inspiration today!

Thanks for visiting my blog. I’m a bit late in responding – the holidays got the best of me. Pigs are supposed to be very intelligent so I’m sure they did have a destination in mind. I do wonder what ever happened to them …
