“Two pigs were last seen heading north …”
The notice said, “Two pigs were last seen heading north on Eighth Street … .” It was our neighborhood Facebook group page, where folks post missing dogs and cats, if one needs lawn service or there are free items in the alley. It seems they were pet pigs (not sure how you could tell. Perhaps they had better manners as they ran through adjacent yards). If someone knows of a poster stating someone had lost their dog or cat, others would try and match up the person to the pet. Surely there couldn’t be more than one set of lost pet pigs in our particular neighborhood? One helpful person thought…

IWSG: What would make you stop writing?
The purpose of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group is to share and encourage other writers. Content is posted the first Wednesday of every month. Answer to July question/writing prompt: In February, I had a detached retina and emergency eye surgery to repair it. They put a buckle around my eye and filled it with gas so it was like looking through a snow globe with my right eye. For almost three months I couldn’t see well (unless I closed one eye). Believe me, I now understand why God gave us two eyes – it’s very hard to see, or keep your balance when walking, or drive with one eye. I…

Victrola
My brother calls me right before my birthday in November and says, “You’ll never guess what I have.” He was right. I couldn’t guess. He told me he’d gotten a turntable and was able to play some of his old records. He asked if I had kept my records and I said, “They are somewhere around here.” I had a feeling they were in the garage and if the mice hadn’t eaten them (or sold them to their music-savvy relatives), then I still had them. For my birthday, he gave me a turntable. After doing a little sleuthing, I found out that my brother, Gary, had given me his turntable…

Instant Pot craze
In December, I broke down and purchased an Instant Pot with a gift card bonus from work. I’ve been hearing about how well, and how quickly it cooks everything from a whole chicken to hard boiling the perfect eggs. It makes yogurt (I had no idea that one could make her own yogurt). It makes perfect rice. Apparently it does almost everything. Does it do windows, I asked? No, it doesn’t do windows. In purchasing my incredible new machine, I did research. I had no idea that it was introduced in 2010. It took me almost 10 years to buy in to this important cooking wonder. I was told by…

Community is important
Merriam-Webster defines community as “a unified body of individuals: such as the people with common interests living in a particular area … a social state or condition … or society at large. In this current time, I’d like to talk about the “people with common interests …”. Sheltering in place due to the spread of the coronavirus has been going on now for two weeks but it seems like months. My husband and I always wished we had more time to spend together, as our familial community, so you’d think we’d be in heaven. He suffers from depression and being able to swim almost every day really helps him physically…

At this time …
IWSG and Blogging from A to Z: At this time, how are things in your world? Three weeks ago, I wouldn’t have imagined working from home, from my kitchen table, enjoying the view from my kitchen window (see photo above). I am a marketing director for a nonprofit who is struggling to survive (both physically and from a business standpoint). Writing for the A to Z Challenge and the Insecure Writer’s Support Group takes on a whole new feel. My professional writing usually consists of advertising and promotional copy, blog posts and lots of editing AP-style. Recently, my writing/editing has included Covid-19 updates. Quite the change. My personal creative writing…

A new normal?
So, a lot has changed since October, when I last posted to my blog. I think my writing has been hibernating, afraid to come out for fear of frostbite. Is that possible? In a week, it will be April and of course that means taking part in the Blogging A to Z blogathon. I’m not sure I’ll make it – okay, that’s not the right way to go into this event. Yes, I’m sure I’m going to blog every day (except Sunday) in April, fully completing the A to Z blogathon! So, Covid 19 happened. Today the first death in our county was reported. The only data that we have…

IWSG: Writing goals and 9 prompt resources
One of my new goals for generating more curiosity in my life (to defeat cynicism) is to make a point of writing more often. Even if no one else reads it or I only harvest a few kernels of good writing among whole corn cobs of yuck, I want to write more often! I have made a commitment to myself to write at least three times per week, beginning in June (okay, so I’m procrastinating just a tad). Not everything will be publishable, but I want to write for at least 30 minutes per session. Less than 30 minutes and my deeper creative juices don’t get tapped. If I can…

“L”ive worms
Why do we insist on using the word "live" before things that should be universally understood. Oy!
