Favorite genre?
I’ve joined up with the Insecure Writer’s Support Group (again) and am committing to writing at least once a month, on the first Wednesday of the month. I’m a bit late (again) but I’m hoping with this post that I will redeem myself. If I miss more than one month, I will be axed from the group and I still have bruises from the last time. I must really like this group to recommit to it so often 😉
I’m choosing to answer the June question for May: what is my favorite genre to write in? I do prefer reading mysteries and have about 100 pages of a fiction, cozy mystery written. Makes sense, right? If I enjoy reading mysteries then writing one should be a piece of cake?
I haven’t been able to get past this level with my novel. I’m beginning to wonder if perhaps I don’t enjoy writing fiction as much as I thought.
I do enjoy writing more “real life” happenings on my blog, and have thought about doing a collection of my best posts, related to my uprooting my life 14 years ago to move from Denver, Colorado, to Terre Haute, Indiana, to work for a non-profit. I still work for that non-profit and really enjoy what I do. Some of my favorite writers have been “real life” writers: Erma Bombeck (“If Life is a Bowl of Cherries, Why am I Always in the Pitts?”), Bailey White (“Mama Makes up her Mind”), Nora Ephron (“I Feel Bad About My Neck …”) and Jen Lancaster (“Bitter is the New Black …”). I also like Fannie Flagg because her tone and voice reel you into her stories like a mountain trout on salmon eggs.
So, I will continue to work on my mystery novel – probably until the day I die. However, I want to write more about daily life because it’s personal and cathartic and right on the tip of my tongue.
How about you? What do you like to read? What do you like to write about?

Being a mystery writer, for me with one published and a dozen drafts, can frustrate some days and be fun on others. It depends if you enjoy baking every day. Is your sleuth a ‘real life’ writer?

The mystery/suspense/thriller genre is my favourite… though I must admit that of late, I’ve been reading loads of non-fiction too.
When it comes to writing, my stories also lean towards mystery/suspense. I think that I may also be that person who works on her novel until the day she dies.
However, I also have a non-fiction work in the pipe line… we’ll see.
P.S. The IWSG is a wonderful group. No doubt about it. So stick with us…

Thank you for your encouraging words, Michelle. I’ve been encouraged, and hope to encourage, others on the IWSG. It is the best group that I’ve found. I’ll take a look at your writing online. Glad to “meet” you and wish you the best success in your writing endeavors.

I admire your ability to write about your own life. I find it very hard, which is why I gave up blogging. I’m definitely a fiction person. Literary fiction is my passion–I’m not a genre reader. I do enjoy women’s fiction if it’s well written, e.g. Elizabeth Berg. I like well-written love stories, but not the formulas of romance fiction.

Thank you for your comment. I enjoy reading fiction quite a bit also, which is why I thought I’d enjoy writing it. And, I do. I just need to be more disciplined in my writing. Something that I struggle with in other areas of my life as well. I’ll have to check out Elizabeth Berg. Thanks for the recommendation. I hope you’re enjoying spring.
