“K”indergarten
Kindergarten is a German word for “a class or small school for young children, usually between the ages of four and six, to prepare them for primary education.”
Things I remember about kindergarten:
- We had to ask for the “girl” or “boy” key to visit the restroom, and you had to bring it back so the next person could use it.
- Sometimes my friend, who was a boy, would ask for his key and I would ask for my key, so we could meet in the coat room and talk. Ooooh, we were so sneaky then!
- I was in a college psychology class at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and I discovered that one of my good friends from kindergarten, who I secretly had a crush on when I was 6, was in my class. What are the odds? I was so dumbfounded that I couldn’t tell him, although we were friendly in class. If I’m remembering correctly, his name was Paul. He looked just the same – he hadn’t changed in all those years. He was taller but he still looked like that boy I knew in Denver. Amazing!
- I remember thinking, “School isn’t so bad. You get snacks and nap time.” Boy was I wrong!
- I really liked my kindergarten teacher, whose name I think was Mrs. Patterson. Not 100 percent on that.
- I remember visiting Sabin Elementary School years later and was amazed at how small the chairs and tables were.
Do you have any memories of kindergarten and if so, what are your favorites?

I remember being extremely carefree when I was in kindergarten (as one should be). A memory that stands out is when I chased a boy around the yard, and unfortunately, he fell. He has a scar above his right eye, to this day and whenever I meet up with him (yes, those of us from kindergarten bump into one another occasionally), I see that scar and remember that I was a really fast runner.

I didn’t go to kindergarten (that would’ve been about 1964). I think it was optional, or perhaps not even an option at our school. I remember loving my first grade teacher Miss Iberg, though. And I must have caught onto reading very quickly because I remember her taking me to the Gr. 2 classroom to pick out some books to read. 🙂
Thanks for following my blog!

Thanks for sharing your memories! Doesn’t surprise me that you like reading. Happy almost Easter!

I remember the school being on a hill, but that may be because I drove past it for decades afterwards. I have a more vivid memory of the extra lessons that I had and being tied to the chair as I wriggled so much.

Tied to a chair? Pretty sure that would be considered child abuse today. Sorry about that!

Probably. But it worked for me – and I even like safety belts.

I am still good friends with 2 of the girls from my first kindergarten class!
I got bitten by a girl called Monica on my hand! That memory is so freaking vivid!
My mom says I threw up every single day before I went to school because I was scared they were going to force me to eat! She then got special permission to come over at lunch time for almost a year! Who has a 9 to 3 schedule for 4 year olds? But, that’s how it was back then. But, I don’t have any memory of that
